Stationary activities as defined in this study may also take place in international areas. Since the study here concentrates on environmentally harmful stationary activities, the main area of concern here is the exploitation of hydrocarbon resources deposited in the deep sea-bed (the Area) of the Arctic Ocean. Only a general overview is necessary here because it is not likely that offshore hydrocarbon exploitation will begin in the Area in general in the near future, not to mention the Arctic Ocean, which poses particularly difficult operating conditions.
